Toilet training
The dreaded 'T' does come in twos!
We tried toilet training a few times at different stages.
The first time was around 20 months. Even though he showed a few signs like not liking nappies he was not quite ready. He wanted to sit on the potty with his nappy on so we encouraged him as we saw it as a step in the right direction.
A few months afterwards, we tried again. On that day there were more than 5 accidents and it was just not happening. So again, we left it for a few more months, tried again at around 30 months and it worked!
Lessons we learnt:
-
Don't force it, wait for baby's cues. If he is getting frustrated, stop and try again in a few months time. Every child is different, this is a big step for your child.
-
Make sure you are well prepared for those few days as you need to give him undivided attention. This includes meals being prepared beforehand and not done whilst trying to potty train as it will lead to frustration with all parties!
-
Be prepared for accidents and don't make a big deal about it.
-
Remain positive even if it doesn't happen until after a few times. Focus on the end result, one more step to independence and another milestone reached. Plus the extra cash you'll have from not buying any more nappies!
-
Some people say to use pull ups but research suggests that this may take baby longer to potty train. From personal experience, I initially tried pull ups but he seemed confused as the pull ups felt like nappies. So we ditched that and went commando which worked and he was potty trained within 3 days. Once he learnt, I introduced the big boy briefs!
-
In terms of tools, we used the portable potty, toilet cover with the little ladder attached. Be flexible and allow him to use whichever he prefers.
