Sleep
Generally newborn's sleep for 16 hours a day in short bursts during the day and night for up to four hours. It's common for newborn's to wake 2-3 times at night for a feed.
What I found useful :
-
Newborns do not know the difference between day and night so we used to have a lamp on instead of putting the light on when he woke. This allowed him to adjust to the difference quicker.
-
During pregnancy I used to play music whilst sleeping. I played the same music after baby was born and found he fell asleep quicker whilst listening to it.
-
Wrapping baby to avoid sudden jerks helped him sleep better.
-
Changing nappy before feed so this way he wouldn't wake if I changed him after the feeding which may have made falling asleep harder.
-
I slept when he slept. Remember you will be feeding your little one at least 8-12 times a day so the easiest way to get some rest is when they are asleep. Especially in the 6 weeks after birth it is important for you to get as much rest at possible so you are both mentally and physically strong.
