Feeding

Generally new born's feed at least 8-12 times a day, sometimes more, that means within every 2-3hrs! If you're breastfeeding this often, the more he feeds, the more milk you will produce.

Feed on cue. Look for signs of hunger such as hands to the mouth, sucking on fist/fingers and lip smacking.  Fussing and crying comes later.

With breastfeeding, a few things I found useful :

  • expressing milk so dad or family could feed him while I rested.

  • making sure I was always in a comfortable position as it takes a while before the feed is over.

  • making sure he was burped after every feed

  • it's easy to worry if he was eating enough. So as long as he was content between feedings, had wet diapers, regular bowel movements and was gaining weight I didn't worry.

If you are having problems breastfeeding, do see a lactation consultant or if you don't have one speak with your GP.  Don't feel guilty if you are having trouble breast feeding or are unable to produce enough milk. Switch to the bottle without guilt.
