Mastitis

Mastitis is a breast inflammation usually caused by infection.  It is common in the first 6 months of breast feeding. You will normally feel very tired or run down.  Many mothers quit breastfeeding altogether but you can continue to nurse your baby.  Studies have shown that breastfeeding usually clears up the infection and does not harm the baby.

Symptoms:

Usually starts with a painful area in one breast. May be red or warm to the touch. May have chills, fever, body aches similar to flu like symptoms.

What increases the risk of mastitis?

  • Delaying feeds or expressing milk.  If you skip this, the breasts become full which could lead to mastitis

  • You have had it before

  • Sore or cracked nipples due to poor latching or poor positioning.

Treatment:

Make sure to get treatment for mastitis. Delaying treatment can lead to a breast abscess, which can be harder to treat.

Antibiotics usually cures mastitis. Complete the full dose even if you feel better. Try to get more rest, drink more fluids and use warm or cold packs on the painful breast. Before breastfeeding, place a warm, wet washcloth over the affected breast for about 10 minutes. at least 3 times a day.  This increases the milk flow.  Massaging the affected breast may also increase milk flow.  If your nipples are too sore or cracked and painful, hand express or use a breast pump to empty the breast of milk.
