Morning sickness should just be called anytime sickness!

Some people breeze through their pregnancy. Not me.  I was one of the 'lucky' ones who struggled with hyperemesis and was on medication all through the pregnancy.  So don't worry if you have severe morning sickness...I was told I should take comfort that morning sickness meant that the baby is very healthy!

They say eating foods with more ginger helps. Or licking ginger sweets. I was so desperate one day when absolutely nothing worked that I even tried the travel wrist band (didn't work!).

So what helped me?

a) Having smaller more frequent meals.  When my tummy behaved, I stuck to simple foods like avocado, bread, banana, peanut butter.

b) Sipping lemonade in small quantities helped

c) With fruits, I avoided some fruits that were out of the fridge for too long for example watermelon immediately triggered an adverse reaction.

d) Snacking on crackers proved successful

e) I avoided spicy food due to the impact on my body after throwing up.

f) I avoided buying foods from outside and made meals at home as I knew what ingredients were in the home made meals.  Even eating a freshly made tomato soup that was purchased did not remain long in my tummy. On the bright sight I did save a fair bit!

So aside from the morning sickness, I had severe heartburn and constipation both of which were never an issue before. Mylanta tablets worked wonders with the heartburn.  I preferred the tablets instead of the liquid as it was easy to carry around. Drinking plenty of water and having metamucil helped (never take laxative or stool softener without first speaking with your health care provider).

Outside of the remedies above, your hormones will be all over the place so what got me through was having a good support network of family and friends. Avoid stress and rest more.

Be prepared for potential unexpected changes for eg. not being able to physically go to work due to the sickness. It's important to remain positive and remember that this too will pass and you will have a healthy baby at the end of it.:)
