What to eat or not to eat when pregnant

It's important to eat healthy as a lifestyle instead of specific times like when you are pregnant!  I didn't eat too badly before pregnancy (though I loved my hot chips!) but was amazed at the attention I now spent on what I ingested!

I will not go into details about healthy food choices as there's an abundance of information around.  Rather there are some foods that should be avoided when pregnant.

Avoid:

a) High mercury fish, raw fish or shell fish

b) Undercooked, raw and unprocessed meat

c) Raw eggs

d) Limit organ meat to no more than once a week

e) Raw sprouts, unwashed produce

f) Processed junk food

Outside of food, it goes without saying that things like alcohol, drugs, smoking should be avoided.  I loved having a cup of coffee every morning but stopped completely until after I stopped breastfeeding. I've read on sites that it does not need to be completely avoided and that only excessive drinking should be stopped. I was not an excessive caffeine drinker - stopping was a personal choice.

I paid attention to food labels and researched things that I was unsure of and ended up avoiding some natural teas too.

I continued taking folic acid (and started taking it around 6 months before falling pregnant).

Next....Morning sickness
