 Life skills

It's important to start teaching your little one positive habits and life skills from a young age.

He may not be quite ready to mow the lawn or take the trash out but he can still learn that everyone helps around the house.

Some of the life skills we have taught our little one includes:

  • Taking the trash out.  It's started with taking the little bin from the room to the kitchen.

  • Washing the dishes.  He helps with washing the plastic containers with me.

  • Picking up the toys. Make it fun for eg. put a dance video on and dance while picking or make a competition out of who will pick up more toys.

  • Planting eg. beans.  He's had the opportunity to see how some veges grow as it's planted in our back yard.  He has helped with harvesting tomatoes, carrots, corn, potatoes.

  • When it's macadamia season, he helps with picking up the nuts that have fallen on the ground in the backyard.

  • Picking up eggs from the chickens at his uncle's home.  This way he learns that eggs don't come from the supermarket but a hen.

  • Helping with the laundry for example holding the basket with me, putting the clothes into the machine, the detergent in and handing me pegs when I'm putting the clothes out to dry.

  • Peeling fruits like a mandarin

  • Making his bed in the morning.

  • Taking his empty plate and cup to the sink after eating.

  • Swimming. He started lessons at 8 months and loves it.
